Sargassum algae are brown algae that come from the tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean. These algae are often associated with environmental problems because of their proliferation in some coastal areas. In Martinique, Sargassum seaweed has been an increasing problem in recent years. The algae can cause damage to coastal ecosystems by covering beaches and inhibiting plant and coral growth. It can also cause problems for economic activities such as fishing and tourism. Scientists are currently working on ways to reduce Sargassum blooms in Martinique, including using natural methods such as the use of fish that feed on algae. Local authorities and community organizations are also working together to raise awareness of the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems and reducing activities that can contribute to Sargassum blooms.
