Traditional rowing, commonly known as “3 Z’aviwon”, is a key element of Martinique’s cultural heritage. It is widespread along the Caribbean coast, and is practiced on wooden boats, with 3 rowers on a fixed bench and a “boss” (coxswain). The “3 Z’Aviwon” races attract many fans who come to support crews with colorful names, such as “Frappez des Ailes”, “Étoile du Nord” and “La Frégate”.

The Regional Natural Park of Martinique supports the preservation of this cultural heritage by providing assistance to the Rowing League of Martinique. Today, men’s and women’s teams and more and more young people are competing in the championship phases. This sport is becoming increasingly popular in local clubs.
